The body type, as it turns out, is linked to class roles as part of the game's fantasies"as per Rod D2R Items, executive producer and head of the Diablo franchise at Blizzard Entertainment.
"Body type is something we believe is part of the class's imagination," Fergusson said in a roundtable interview, noting that the designer made the "'dad bod' Druid and an emaciated Necromancer" on purpose. "Those are all part of what make the class a class, in some respects in other ways, and having a dad body Necro or an obese Druid didn't contribute to the class's fantasy.
"We wanted to offer as much variety as possible in terms of there [beingmany different ethnicities and hair and markings as well as eye colors, but there were certain aspects that helped make the class a class in the first place, and for Diablo 4 it was body type."Body form and archetypes of the class are also part of Diablo 4's armor and gear design, and all of the other cosmetics that play into the class, Fergusson said. Also, creating armor that is suitable for the size of a barbarian body would be difficult to translate in a version that weighs 90 pounds of the identical class. "The primary idea was to offer the best choice of high-end options that you can get from the Diablo game," Fergusson said. "We wanted the game to be more about your personalization [and] customization, but your barbarian will remain a barbarian -- it's going to be strong and not a waif."
Diablo 4 reinforces the variety of character options through showing the campfire of adventurers sporting random look when you load the game. There's no indication from the game of the fact that the cheap diablo 2 resurrected items Barbarian is supposed to be a blonde dude that hails from Mount Arreat, or that the other classes are stuck in gender or ethnicity roles automatically.
